From a Panicked Morning to a Restful, Easy Day...

Happy May-long weekend to all my Canadian friends! We, along with many of our friends, aren't going camping or away to a cottage like the quintessential May-long weekend calls for...instead, we stayed at home to play...wait for it..dodgeball!

It was such a blast! If you're finding you lack in the motivation department to make it to the gym or get out for a run, try thinking outside the box and get some exercise in a non-conventional way - you won't even realize you're burning off calories. :) Most of our evening consisted of slinging small plush balls, sliding on the slippery gym floor, and sprinting back and forth, trying to evade the shots from the opposing team. Wish we had taken our camera along for the fun, because we played several games where you had to throw with your "unnatural" arm (left for most of us)...that sure evened the playing field and made for some hilarious moments! After the games we all headed to Boston Pizza to continue to fellowship, conversations, and to share a bit of food with each other.

Needless to say, it was a late night by the time we got home. Mikey was to leave today for Abbotsford en route to work on our film and to have some meetings with people on the West Coast until I joined him this coming Wednesday for a Young Adult Cancer Canada Retreat for the weekend. His flight was set to leave early at 6:40, meaning we had to get to the airport (which we live almost as far away from as you can get!) at 5:00 am...so the alarm was set at 4:30 am and we went to bed sleepy but feeling armed and ready for an early am wake-up.

...until the alarm DIDN'T go off and we woke up at 5:50 am! Ahh! Bolting out the door despite feelings of upset stomachs from panic and hopelessness with the drive still ahead of us, we hopped in the car and I sped to the airport. He made it - barely - but he made it nonetheless. Jumped on the plane to Vancouver and I got word that he was safe and sound at Denny's with our friend Jen who picked him up. Nothing like a good breakfast to settle the rushed soul! ;)

After driving home in the early morning, CBC Radio in my ears, I enjoyed some Peet's French Roast coffee (my favorite from the Bay Area, CA!), a recently homemade granola bar with almond butter, and a banana with some plain yogurt, cinnamon, and flax seed. Talk about delish! I enjoyed the slow morning, my sips of coffee, and some good time reading and praying for the upcoming week ahead for both my husband and I. Then it was off to train my in-laws - good for them to get in a Saturday morning workout on the first day of a long weekend! :) It was a great workout that got me pumped up to...study at home for my upcoming Nutrition & Wellness Specialist exam. In between studying at home, I made some chickpea burgers on thin sandwich slices with some BBQ sauce. What a great lunch!

Later I decided I had to clear my ever-foggy-growing mind and headed out the door for a run. I left without a watch or a real concept of my time on the pavement and was refreshed by the air, uplifted by the beautiful sky, and recharged to head back home and study. I saw some beautiful little flowers and swooped them up, remembering how my mom always had fresh flowers at home, whether hand-plucked or store-bought, to keep the atmosphere beautiful and inviting, regardless of how much money we had in the bank. I ran the whole way home with them. :)

I had a great run and was so glad I went...the weather was actually a lot more beautiful outside moving in it than inside looking out at it! I got motivated to clean up the house and then set out to try a new farmer's market (to me) that opened back up for the season this weekend near Blackfoot Trail. Alas, everything looked dead and the few shops still left were closing up when I arrived, so I jutted over to the Calgary Farmer's Market in hopes of seeing my friend Erika who works with Fibres of Life. She had just left, but I still browsed the shops, looked at the beautiful vegetables, and ended up buying a cotton headband with a little brooch. I'm excited to wear it and love that the proceeds of it benefit women in Nepal.

All in all, it was a great afternoon jaunt and I left to buy some bulk items at Superstore before heading in for the night.

As I was roaming the aisles at Superstore, it hit me - HARD - that I hadn't refuled after my run and I suddenly felt like I was going to faint. Yikes! I've wanted to try out some Clif Bar Luna Bars (made for women) so I thought this was a great opportunity, and one much while I browsed turned into almost the entire package by the time I got to the car. It was great! Hit the spot and instantly took care of my slight nauseau and weak feelings.

This coupled with a great blueberry/strawberry/French Vanilla yogurt/flax seed/cran-orange juice smoothie finished me off for the night. Well that and a scoop of vanilla ice cream with two baby cookies I made for some friends tomorrow evening. ;) Everything in moderation!

So what started out as a rushed morning turned into a beautiful, productive, and restful afternoon with some enjoyable movement and delicious food. Grateful for a body that can move, for access to nourishing sustenance, for a husband who works hard and is passionate about what he does, and for a God who makes it all meaningful. Hope you are living well, continuing to move and eat real foods, and enjoying the weekend!
I'd love to know: What are you up to for the weekend? Any movement planned, exercise- or recreation-wise? Thanks for stopping by to read; let me know what's in store for you this weekend!
